Well… you wouldn’t know it now, but what a dull weekend of weather it was a couple of weeks ago. Definitely not a weekend to get your family photography session done… Is what pretty much every family that I had booked in was thinking. I think all the families who had a photography session on the weekend messaged me at some point saying ‘should we reschedule?’ and I don’t blame them, it was cold, and wet.
A little rain wasn’t going to stop me though (which I’m sure had the families worried). I ended up photographing all the family sessions which turned out to be all over Sydney – travelling to far west Sydney in the Cobbitty area near Camden for an awesome Country ‘Mud Splash’ session (yeah, I just came up with that… could be a thing. Stay tuned), all the way over to Bicentennial Park, Glebe in the inner west for a fun park session, then back near home in Lake Parramatta Reserve for a bit of a bush walk. I reckon the pictures that came out of them will be ones they will (and I will) remember forever. The moments that were captured were just amazing. Glistening rain drops, puddle wars, and soft light. Topped off by a little play in the park. The kids absolutely loved it.
You know, great family photos don’t always have to be at magic hour with beautiful backlit kids, and the sun lighting up the sky in different colours. It can be anytime, in any weather. You just have to use it to your advantage – if it’s windy use hair or flowy clothing to give the photos movement. If it’s in harsh sun, light and shade gives great contrast and depth to the photos, and if it’s raining… use the droplets, the puddles. Of course there are extremes where it makes it hard to do anything , but at the end of the day you are coming out ahead if you capture those moments. That’s what is the most important element for any family session with your kids.
